Chakali (Chityala) Ilamma

Before Telangana became a state, its fields were shaped by the struggles of peasants against entrenched feudal power. Among them rose Chakali Ilamma, a self-taught and fierce woman who refused to let landlords dictate her existence.

Her resistance began on her own patch of land. When the local zamindar, Visnoor Ramachandra Reddy, attempted to seize her fields and impose arbitrary levies, Ilamma refused. Her stand inspired many in the village, especially women who had long lived at the margins.

With support from the Andhra Mahasabha and the Communist Party, her home became a hub for rebels, peasants, and organizers who challenged Deshmukhs and the violent Razakars. She was not merely part of the movement but one of its defining forces.

Ilamma’s courage turned her into a symbol of anti-caste and anti-feudal resistance, a woman who insisted that land and dignity belonged to everyone. When she passed away in 1985, Telangana lost a warrior and gained an enduring icon.
