Soni Sori

Soni Sori began her life as a schoolteacher in Bastar, carrying chalk dust on her fingers and the weight of her community’s struggles in her heart. In the forests of Chhattisgarh, where Adivasi voices are often overshadowed by conflict between state forces and insurgent groups, teaching became an act of hope.

In 2011, that hope was met with cruelty. Arrested on allegations of assisting Maoists, she was taken into custody and subjected to torture and sexual assault by the police. Her body became a site of punishment for being a woman who stood firm in a conflict zone.

When the courts later acquitted her in most cases for lack of evidence, Soni emerged not with silence but with renewed resolve. Her release marked her transformation into a powerful human rights defender who raised her voice for Adivasi communities trapped between violence and neglect.

In 2018, she received the Front Line Defenders Award. For the people of Bastar, her greatest contribution was the dignity she reclaimed for her community through sheer courage and perseverance.
